BRUTISH / STUPID

Proverbs 12:1Whoso loveth correction loveth knowledge; But he that hateth reproof is brutish. I don’t mind saying that being corrected, for me, is very humbling. This is especially the case if it is done in public, but it’s painful just about every time. Consequently, I try really hard to be correct or to offer my perspective in such a way the hearer knows it comes with a qualifier, such as “I may be mistaken, but I think…”  Yet, when I am corrected, as painful as it is, I am made better because, at the very least, I have more accurate information and better-grounded knowledge. It benefits me a lot! On the other hand, the one who hates correction and, also, refuses its overtures is brutish, or stupid (ESV).

Reminds of Hebrews 12 and the correction administered by the Lord to his own: "For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant..." (v. 11, ESV). But it pays off in character formation.
